The McCarton Center Shadow Teacher Service provides support to children in mainstream classroom, camp and after school settings. Various interventions are utilized based in an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) model. Systematic prompting and reinforcement are used to support students in their classroom environment to ensure successful learning in cognitive, social-emotional, communicative, and adaptive domains.

Objectives of the shadow teacher include:

  • Assisting students in acquiring new skills and information
  • Promoting the generalization of previously learned skills to the classroom setting
  • Enhancing socialization with peers
  • Promoting independence in classroom activities
  • Minimizing and preventing challenging behaviors

Shadow teachers participate in a collaborative working relationship with parents, teachers, school staff and other professionals working with each child. All those providing shadow teacher services receive continuous supervision and training by the supervisor of that division.
